Install

Open search
⌘⇧Space (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+Space (Windows/Linux), or click the toolbar icon.

Type
Title, host, folder, or short name. Enter opens.

Name what matters
Tab on a result (or right-click a page) → add a short name.

Settings → Hotkey slots → Ctrl+Shift+1 / 2 / 3.
Search
Search that stays out of the page’s way.
Whistle opens in a dedicated window. Type freely — Gmail, Trello, and Slack cannot intercept your keys.

Short names
Messy titles. Clean names.
Aliases are 1–20 characters (letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens). Set them from search (Tab) or from any page (right-click → Whistle – Add alias). If the page is not bookmarked yet, Whistle saves it first — including # fragment differences, like Chrome.
- Toolbar badge can show the short name for the page you are on.
Hotkey slots
Three keys. Three favourites.
Pin up to three bookmarks and open them without search. Defaults are Ctrl+Shift+1 / 2 / 3. On Mac, slots use Control — not Command — so they do not clash with screenshots.
- Settings → Hotkey slots → pick bookmarks → Save slots
- Leave a slot empty if you do not need it
- Change keys in Settings → Customize shortcuts, or chrome://extensions/shortcuts
Library
Your whole collection, on one page.
Search, sort, list or tiles. Folder sidebar on by default. Turn on Dates when you need added / visited / Whistle. Large libraries load in pages of 24 with Show more. Manage from ⋯: open, edit, alias, remove.

Analytics
Usage and hygiene, still on your machine.
Periods 7 / 30 / 90 days. Library tab (default): recently visited, top sites, recently added, safe to delete, plus alias % / duplicates / age mix. Whistle tab: opens, unique bookmarks, frequently / recently accessed. Grid or list layout. Launch timestamps stay local ≤90 days — separate from anonymous telemetry sent to Nelstack.
Cleanup & backup
Duplicates stay until you decide.
Find pages saved more than once. Nothing is deleted until you say so. Export aliases, slots, and appearance — optionally every bookmark.
- The Bookmarks bar copy is kept when possible; otherwise the shallowest folder wins
- Backup files list keyboard shortcuts as a reminder — Chrome does not let Whistle change them on import
Privacy
Your bookmarks stay yours.
Bookmarks stay in the browser. Aliases and pins can sync with your browser account. Visit times and Whistle open history stay on this computer for product features only. Whistle sends anonymous usage counts (launcher opens, exports, alias changes) and sanitized error diagnostics when something fails (error code, surface, browser/extension version, message, optional stack) to Nelstack — never bookmark content, URLs, alias text, or install ID. Whistle does not inject into websites and does not ask to read page content.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Whistle account?
No.
Does it work on my phone?
No — desktop Chrome and Edge only.
Will sites steal my keystrokes?
No. The launcher is an isolated extension window.
Where do short names sync?
With Chrome Sync if sync is on — same as other synced Chrome settings. Usage stats and launch timestamps do not sync.
Does Whistle send analytics?
Yes — anonymous aggregate usage counts (opens, exports, alias changes, page opens) and sanitized error diagnostics when something fails, sent to Nelstack. Never bookmark content, URLs, alias text, or install ID. See Settings → Privacy or the privacy policy.
What does History permission do?
Last visit in Library (when Dates is on), Analytics recently visited, and safer delete suggestions. Not a history browser.
Can I change shortcuts?
Yes — Settings → Customize shortcuts, or chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
What are the default keyboard shortcuts?
Open search: ⌘⇧Space (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+Space (Windows/Linux). Pinned slots 1–3: Ctrl+Shift+1 / 2 / 3 (Control on Mac, not Command). Change them anytime in Settings → Customize shortcuts, or chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
Does Whistle conflict with Spotlight or system shortcuts?
No for the usual ones. macOS Spotlight is ⌘Space; the emoji picker is ⌃⌘Space. Whistle uses ⌘⇧Space — a different combination. Windows language switching uses Win+Space, not Ctrl+Shift+Space.
Whistle doesn’t open when I press the shortcut — what should I check?
Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts and confirm Open Whistle search is set (not “Not set”). Check for 1Password Quick Access — it uses the same default (⌘⇧Space / Ctrl+Shift+Space) as a global shortcut; change Whistle or 1Password. If another Chrome extension uses the same keys, only one can win — reassign one of them. After a Whistle update, revisit the shortcuts page; Chrome sometimes keeps stale bindings.
I use 1Password — which shortcut should I change?
Either works. Many people move 1Password Quick Access to ⌘⇧\ or ⌃⌥Space and keep Whistle on ⌘⇧Space, or move Whistle to ⌘⇧K / ⌘⇧B. Pick one global owner for each combo.
Can the same shortcut work everywhere like Raycast?
Whistle’s shortcut is a Chrome extension command. It works when Chrome can handle the key and nothing else captures it first. Global apps (1Password, some utilities) may take priority over the browser.
Good alternative shortcuts if the default is taken
⌘⇧K / Ctrl+Shift+K, ⌘⇧B / Ctrl+Shift+B, or Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows/Linux). Always verify they’re free on your machine before committing.
