How part payment works
Add one or more part payments with dates (like ICICI’s planner). Choose keep existing EMI (shorter tenure) or keep existing tenure (lower EMI). Results exclude fees unless you net them into each amount.

What is a part payment calculator?
A part payment calculator shows how a partial lump sum against your outstanding loan changes EMI, tenure and total interest. Axis Finance and Piramal offer similar retail tools with Keep existing EMI and Keep existing tenure options.
How to use it
Enter outstanding amount, ROI and remaining tenure (years or months). Add one or more part-payment amounts with dates, then compare both benefit modes: shortening the loan at the same EMI versus lowering the instalment for the same end date. Total cash-outflow savings includes the lump sums you schedule.
Use the amortization schedule under the results to see month- and year-wise principal, interest and part payments — it refreshes as you edit the plan. For a fuller guide on penalties, foreclosure vs part payment, and when prepaying makes sense, see the prepayment calculator page.
Prefer “prepayment” wording for the tool itself? Open that page above. To compare the true cost of a new loan with fees, use the APR calculator.
| Feature | Part payment | EMI only | APR view |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus | Effect of dated lump sums on an existing loan | Monthly instalment for a new or full tenure loan | True annual cost including origination charges |
| Modes | Keep EMI or keep tenure; multi-instalment + schedule | Principal, rate and tenure → EMI | Amount, rate, tenure and fees → APR |
| Best for | Bonus, tax refund or surplus cash decisions | Budgeting before you borrow | Comparing loan offers with different fees |
Frequently asked questions about part payment
What is a part payment calculator?
A part payment calculator shows the impact of making one or more partial lump-sum payments on an outstanding loan — home loan, LAP or personal loan. Axis Finance and similar tools let you keep existing EMI or keep existing tenure.
How does a part payment calculator work?
Enter outstanding amount, interest rate, remaining tenure (years or months) and a schedule of part-payment amounts with dates. The tool recomputes either a shorter tenure at the same EMI or a lower EMI for the same tenure, plus interest and cash-outflow savings, and builds an amortization schedule.
Can I use it for any loan type?
Yes for standard reducing-balance loans. Confirm your product allows part payment and whether any fees apply in the schedule of charges.
Can I schedule multiple part payments with dates?
Yes. Use Add instalment to enter several amounts and prepayment dates. Each payment is applied in the corresponding month of your remaining tenure before that month’s EMI. Earlier dates generally save more interest than later ones.
What does the amortization schedule show?
Year-wise and month-wise tables include EMI principal/interest, part payments, closing balance and paid percent. Months with a part payment are highlighted and the tables update when you change inputs.
Are there restrictions on partial payments?
Some lenders set a minimum part-payment amount, limit how often you can prepay, or charge a fee on fixed-rate or certain NBFC products. Always check the Key Fact Statement.
Keep EMI vs keep tenure — which saves more interest?
Keeping the EMI (shortening tenure) usually saves more total interest because principal stays lower for fewer months. Keeping tenure trades interest savings for a smaller monthly instalment.
How accurate are part payment calculators?
Outputs are estimates from the inputs you enter. Actual savings can differ with rate resets, payment posting date and fees. Dates are mapped to months of remaining tenure, not daily interest.
