About personal loan EMI
EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) spreads personal loan repayment evenly across the tenure. Each payment covers interest on the outstanding balance plus principal — the standard reducing-balance method used by Indian banks and NBFCs.
Formula: EMI = [P × r × (1+r)n] / [(1+r)n − 1], where P is loan amount, r is monthly interest rate, n is tenure in months.
Illustrative only. Actual EMI may differ with processing fees, floating rates and lender rounding. Prepayments are not modelled in this schedule.

What is a personal loan?
A personal loan is typically an unsecured retail loan for medical expenses, travel, home renovation, education top-ups or debt consolidation. Because there is usually no collateral, interest rates are higher than home or car loans, and tenures are shorter — commonly one to five years.
This calculator estimates monthly EMI, total interest and total repayment so you can check whether a personal loan fits your monthly budget before you apply.
How personal loan EMI is calculated
EMI = [P × r × (1+r)n] / [(1+r)n − 1]
P = loan principal, r = monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), n = tenure in months. Most Indian personal loans use this reducing-balance formula.
Worked example: ₹5,00,000 at 12% p.a. for 3 years (36 months) → EMI and total interest appear in the results panel. Use the rate on your offer, which often depends on credit score and income.
Amortization schedule
The year-wise table shows principal and interest paid each year and the remaining balance. Expand month-wise breakup for instalment-level cash-flow planning. On short personal loan tenures, interest still front-loads but the loan amortizes faster than a home loan.
Personal loan rules to keep in mind
Lenders must disclose APR, processing fees and foreclosure terms clearly. Prepayment charges and lock-in periods vary by product — read the key fact statement. Compare total cost, not only the monthly EMI, when evaluating offers.
Tax treatment
For most salaried borrowers, personal loan interest is not tax-deductible. If the loan is used for a purpose that attracts a specific deduction under the Income Tax Act, treatment may differ — obtain advice for your facts.
Personal loan vs secured loan EMIs
Unsecured personal loans are faster to obtain but usually cost more than home or car loans. For a general EMI estimator, use the EMI calculator.
| Feature | Personal loan EMI | Home loan EMI | Car loan EMI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security | Typically unsecured | Property mortgage | Vehicle hypothecation |
| Interest level | Usually higher than secured loans | Among the lowest retail rates | Between personal and home loan rates |
| Typical tenure | 1–5 years for most products | Up to 20–30 years | 1–7 years commonly |

Frequently asked questions about personal loan EMI
What is a personal loan EMI?
Personal loan EMI is the fixed monthly instalment on an unsecured retail loan used for medical needs, travel, debt consolidation or other personal expenses. Most Indian lenders calculate EMI on a reducing-balance basis.
How is personal loan EMI calculated?
Use EMI = [P × r × (1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n − 1], where P is the disbursed amount, r is monthly interest rate (annual ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is tenure in months. Personal loan rates are often higher than home or car loans because there is usually no collateral.
What is a sensible personal loan tenure?
Many products allow up to about 5 years. Shorter tenures mean higher EMI but less total interest. Choose a tenure where EMI fits comfortably within your monthly budget after other obligations.
Does the calculator include processing fees or GST?
No. It estimates EMI on principal and interest only. Processing fees, insurance (if any) and GST on charges are billed separately by the lender.
Is personal loan interest tax-deductible?
For most salaried individuals, personal loan interest is not deductible. If funds are used for a purpose that attracts a specific deduction under the Income Tax Act, rules differ — seek professional advice.
How does credit score affect personal loan EMI?
A stronger credit profile often gets a lower rate, which lowers EMI for the same amount and tenure. Enter the rate you are actually offered, not the lowest advertised rate.
Can I prepay a personal loan?
Many lenders allow foreclosure or part-prepayment after a lock-in. Charges and options (EMI reduction vs tenure reduction) vary — read the key fact statement.
Personal loan vs credit card EMI — which is cheaper?
Personal loan rates are often lower than revolving credit-card interest, but card EMI schemes and merchant offers vary. Compare total interest and fees for the same amount and tenure before choosing.
